Volume of 3D shapes

equation meme
In Maths we've been exploring area and volume. Area is the flat surface that a shape covers whilst volume is the 3D space that it takes up.
Because we're amazing at working out areas, it's really easy for us to calculate volume too.
To find the volume of a prism you can calculate the area of the cross section (the 2D shape) and multiply it by the length.

For example...
This 3D shape has the cross section of a quadrilateral that can be split into a rectangle and a triangle.

Step 1) Area of rectangle 10cm x 7cm=70cm2      (the rectangle)

Step 2)  Area of triangle ½ (3cm x 7cm) = 10.5cm2   (the triangle)

Step 3)  Triangle + Rectangle      10.5cm2 + 70cm2 = 80.5 cm2   (cross section)

Step 4)  Cross section x length     80.5cm2  x 5cm2  = 402.5cm3 (volume)

Could you try these ones?

On National Poetry Day we created our own class poem and then performed it as a rap!
We were inspired by the amazing Lence, who is a spoken word artist who has been hosting workshops for us here at Iveson.

In history we've been exploring the legacy of the Ancient Greeks.
Did you know that much of Modern Western society is modelled on theirs?

We explored their different discoveries and decided which we thought were the most important.

Friday 15 March 2024

We've been trying to describe what Elysium would be like this week.
We explored the use of AI alongside our descriptions to produce an image of what we'd written about...

Ever wondered how you could really take control in Ancient Greece?
Well read our explanation texts to find out!!

Thursday 8 February 2024

We just couldn't stay inside and watch the snow falling!

Today we started painting our Greek Theatre masks!

Monday 5 February 2024

In maths we will soon be moving on to our decimals topic.
We're already pretty hot in the topic, but did you know about this sneaky tip for multiplying two decimal numbers?

It's a clay kind of a day!
Today we began putting our sculpting skills to develop our Grecian inspired theatre masks

Thursday 1 February 2024

As part of our PE and outdoor learning we've been enjoying orienteering and completing scavenger hunts and challenges using maps of the school!

In this picture we've found the location and are completing the physical challenge that was on the marker

We've been inspired by Ancient Greece in our artwork

Monday 29 January 2024

We've been using different tools to  build our sculpting skills.
This term we will create a sculpted mask inspired by Ancient Greek theatre masks

Monday 22 January 2024

Would you know what to do if we asked you to multiply two mixed numbers?
hmmm
Here's easy trick!
When you're multiplying two mixed numbers the easiest thing to do is to convert it to an improper (top heavy) fraction!
We've been exploring all things fractions this term and this hand method has really made it easier.
Take a look at the example here!
Multiplying Mixed Numbers (Definition, Examples) - BYJUS
Then all you have to do is convert it back to a mixed number (and maybe simplify).
So for 4 1/3 x 3 2/5 our answer would be 14 and 11/15

Wednesday 29 November 2023

We've been exploring the evolution of different animals and how dogs have evolved under the influence of people.

Monday 27 November 2023

We've been exploring how we have different sensory needs when we're concentrating, and have been making the most of different figet toys, balance cushions, ear defenders, and head phones.
In PSHE we're creating designs of our brain labs that celebrate our different ways of thinking and our different needs.

We used biscuits to help us to understand evolution and cladograms!
